Welcome to my blog post. I have been wanting to do a blog for a couple of years now, but never got it started. I am so glad to be able to do this and share my frustrations, visions, hopes, and dreams with you via this blog….so with that, thanks for being here!
When I share why I started LeadHERship Coaching & Consulting, I always share what made me to create this space for Women of Color in LeadHERship. Being a woman in leadership is difficult enough, but sprinkle some Black Girl Magic into the mix and yeah….I am basically a unicorn. Like no for real. Don’t believe me, then check these statistics out. Women of Color make up 37% of the civilian workforce. You’re probably like that’s not bad, but you’re not unicorn. Oh you just wait girlfriend. Women of Color who are in management and higher drops that percentage from 37% to 3%. Oh I’m not done. If you are in Executive Leadership, it drops to 0.07%. I am in the 0.07%.....so I’m basically a unicorn.
With all that being said, I was sitting in my car in February in the parking lot of my job. I was sitting there feeling overwhelmed, defeated, undervalued, invisible. I thought to myself, “I can’t be the only person that feels that way. But what does a woman like me go for support, venting, and validation that I’m not crazy?” I didn’t know. I feel like I have been on a deserted island because I am the only Black person in executive leadership at my job and I’m a Black woman at that. I really wanted to know if there was a space for me and other women like. I couldn’t find much, so guess what? I created that space!
I truly created LeadHERship because I wanted to create a space for women of color to share in the joys and frustrations of leadership. Often as Black women, we are told to keep a low profile and keep our heads down in the workplace. Well I’m here to scream to you….”We ain’t on that no more!” This had caused me to work actively towards finding my voice in advocating for Women of Color. If we don’t advocate for us, then who will?
